Getting Involved – Supporting Projects
Teacher: Through partnerships, we’ve been able to develop the school grounds and in developing the school grounds we’ve been able to enhance the curriculum.
We engaged, first of all, with some local people to change the environs of the school to give the children a different perspective of the environment and to make their own environment much nicer.
Royal Bank of Scotland representative: The project is called Super Grounds. It’s a Royal Bank [of Scotland] Community Project whereby the aim is to help primary schools develop and transform their playground into a more exciting environment for the children. My involvement was actually recommending to the school that they entered the project. I assisted with the design of the plans, was actually involved in the implementation, together with other members of staff.
Headteacher: We used the money to engage with people in the local community, we used the four thousand pounds to completely create a new garden at the back. We made some gardens for the children to sit in – some quiet [areas]. Got some picnic benches… did some work there. We had looked at the environs and decided that we needed to save some energy, so we engaged with Solar & Wind and we asked them to create a wind turbine for us.
Solar & Wind Applications representative: During the last year I was called in by Craighead Primary to help assist them with the installation of the installation of the wind turbine. I came to see them and we looked at the site and we discussed the various aspects of installing a wind turbine in the school. I was particularly impressed with the enthusiasm of the teachers and pupils for a wind turbine.
Pupil 1: I like having a wind turbine in my school because its eco-friendly.
Solar & Wind Applications representative: I believe that projects like this are absolutely critical to the younger generation to see the energy of the future. Because it’s going to be their energy when they grow up.
Pupil 2: I like having a wind turbine in my school because it’s easier to get electricity and it’s very eco-friendly.
Pupil 3: I like having a wind turbine in my school because I think we're the first school in East Dunbartonshire to have it, so it's quite cool to be different.
